The Portugal Full Guide contains information about the country and the towns and cities in the country.
Portugal is located in the south western corner of Europe, and shares the Iberian Peninsular with Spain, which has borders to the west and south of Portugal. It has a long North Atlantic coast. Portugal also includes the groups of isalnds in the Atlantic, the Madeira Islands, and the Azores, or Açores
For over 3000 years, Portugal has had different civilizations within it's modern borders. Iberian, Tartessian, Celtic, Phoenician, Carthaginian, Greek, Roman, Germanic (Suevi and Visigoth), and Arabs have all made their mark. Portugal was at it's peak of power in the 15th and 16th centuries, when it was a major world power, with colonies in the Indies, in Africa, and of course, Brazil. The country had major problems when Lisbon was destroyed in an earthquake in 1755. It was occupied during the Napoleonic Wars. And Brazil's declaration of independence in 1822 was another major blow. In 1910, a revolution brought about the fall of the monarchy. Agter that, the country was held in check for over fifty years by it's governments. This came to an end with a military coup in 1974, which made major reforms, leading to the independence of the African colonies the following year. Portugal is a member of NATO, and it joined what is now the European Union in 1986. Portugal is the only country in mainland Europe to keep to Greenwich Mean Time.
